The final day of the group stage is upon us. After today, 72 matches will have been played at the 2026 World Cup and only 16 teams will have been eliminated. That’s a lot of squeeze for not a lot of juice
Nevertheless, there are still things to be settled. Such as the final outcome of Group L, where Croatia, England and Ghana are all scrapping for position before the knockout rounds. Portugal also need a win over Colombia to secure top spot in Group K
Meanwhile, Algeria and Austria face off in Kansas City in a match that will go a long way to determining whether or not their campaigns will extend beyond the group stage

Croatia have yet to find top gear at this World Cup. England may be all but through to the knockout rounds, but Thomas Tuchel’s team still have a point to prove after their goalless draw with Ghana. The Three Lions’ insipid performance brought back unwelcome memories of past major tournament failures and so a response is required against Panama
Panama have already been eliminated after back-to-back defeats to Ghana and Croatia. However, Thomas Christiansen’s side have earned a lot of goodwill for the manner of their performances. They won’t sit back in their final game against England. Tuchel’s team must be alert

In what could be the pick of the bunch in the final round of group-stage games, Colombia face Portugal to determine the top spot in Group K. Colombia only need a point to secure the more favourable route into the knockout rounds and have good reason to be optimistic about their chances
Portugal, however, need three points to leapfrog Colombia into first place. Cristiano Ronaldo and Co found their groove in a dominant 5-0 win over Uzbekistan and must play with the same intensity and intent for another victory. Portugal certainly have the talent to be contenders
Player to watch: Bruno Fernandes, Portugal – While Ronaldo hogged the headlines by bagging a brace against Uzbekistan, it was Fernandes who provided the service and took a grip of the game from his position in the midfield unit

However, Saturday’s match could pose a tactical issue for the Leopards

Algeria’s comeback win over Jordan has given them a good chance of making it out of Group J. Another victory against Austria would see Vladimir Petković’s team secure second place which would be a remarkable success even if it would probably mean a last-32 meeting with Spain
Ralf Rangnick’s high-energy style of play helped Austria to a comfortable win over Jordan in their opening World Cup fixture, but made them easy to play through in the loss to Argentina. The Europeans may be favoured to get the win they need to take second place in the group
