Mariani Theatre in Sant’Agata Feltria inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage

The Mariani Theatre in the village of Sant’Agata Feltria has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the system of condominium theatres in central Italy dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The designation marks an important milestone for local heritage protection and cultural promotion.

Significance: built in 1723 and made of wood, Mariani is widely regarded as Italy’s oldest wooden theatre. The UNESCO listing highlights centuries of theatrical tradition and the community’s continuous care of the site.

    • Origins: inaugurated in 1723 and preserving an 18th-century theatrical layout.
    • Historical highlights: restoration in 1872; a notable season in 1922 with the La Scala orchestra; use for RAI recordings and a major restoration in 2002.
    • Management history: maintained by local residents and the Condominium Society before transfer to the municipality in 1986.

Local institutions, the regional authorities and the Ministry of Culture are already coordinating to secure funds, plan conservation measures and develop cultural programming. An autumn celebration with a special guest is planned to mark the listing.

    Practical information for visitors

    • Location: Sant’Agata Feltria, province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna.
    • Visiting: access is generally by appointment or during scheduled events; check the local programme before travelling.

The UNESCO inscription offers concrete opportunities for conservation funding, increased visibility and cultural participation. For enthusiasts of historic theatre architecture, the Mariani is now a key site to visit and study the condominium theatre tradition in Italy.
