MADRID,(CAJ News)– INTERNATIONAL tourism is continuing to expand, but geopolitical instability, higher travel costs and economic uncertainty are testing the resilience of one of the world’s most important service industries.

The latest United Nations Tourism World Tourism Barometer reported approximately 690 million international tourist arrivals during the first half of 2026, representing growth of 0.4 per cent compared with the same period in 2025.

Africa recorded stronger performance, with arrivals increasing by 4 per cent.

The figures demonstrate that international travel remains attractive, even as conflict, inflation and transport disruptions influence where people go and how much they spend.

However, growth depends on more than attractive scenery. Reliable transport, affordable air connections, visitor safety, clean public spaces, digital booking systems and well-trained hospitality workers all influence travellers’ decisions.

Climate change is another growing concern. Heatwaves, wildfires, flooding and water shortages can disrupt destinations, damage infrastructure and alter seasonal travel patterns.

Tourism operators increasingly need to plan for environmental risks and use re

Businesses must also respond to changing consumer expectations.

Travellers are increasingly interested in authentic experiences, local culture, nature-based holidays and destinations that demonstrate credible environmental responsibility.

Digital technology can help smaller tourism businesses reach international customers, manage bookings and promote experiences without depending entirely on large intermediaries.

Yet digital access and skills remain uneven in many destinations.

Governments can support sustainable growth by improving infrastructure, protecting heritage sites, simplifying appropriate visa procedures and investing in training.

Regional cooperation can also encourage multi-country itineraries, spreading visitor spending across borders.

The industry’s immediate challenge is to balance affordability, profitability and sustainability while navigating international uncertainty.

Tourism remains a powerful bridge between cultures and an important

With thoughtful planning and inclusive investment, destinations can turn visitor demand into lasting economic opportunities for local communities.
