Africa Legacy brings African art history to Brussels

In the centre of the capital, the city of Brussels opens the doors to Africa Legacy, a new exhibition highlighting the artistic history of Africa and its diasporas. The exhibition takes place in the Vanderborght Building in Brussels from 4 September to 11 November. The city is organising the exhibition in collaboration with the Congolese Cultural Centre.

With this exhibition, Brussels aims to draw attention to the important, yet, according to organisers, still often underappreciated role of Africa in global art history. “Africa is not only recognised as the cradle of humanity, but also has a centuries-old tradition of artistic innovation and creation,” it is stated.

The exhibition spans various periods and regions of the African continent. Ancient artworks and heritage pieces are displayed alongside works by contemporary artists. Curator Didier Claes selected pieces from different parts of Africa and its diasporas. The exhibition fosters a dialogue between diverse artistic traditions and demonstrates how African art and culture have influenced artists well beyond the continent.

According to the city, Africa Legacy offers a different perspective on Africa’s place within art history. In addition to the historical significance of the heritage, its influence on contemporary art is also a central focus.
