Aissa Mandi retires from Algeria duty after record-breaking international career
Algeria defender Aissa Mandi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end a record-breaking career with the Desert Warriors that spanned more than a decade and included a historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
The 34-year-old revealed his decision in a video posted on his official Instagram account, saying that representing Algeria had been “a great honour” but that he now felt it was the right moment to step away from the national team.
‘The right time to say goodbye’
Mandi, who captained and anchored Algeria’s backline through multiple major tournaments, spoke emotionally as he explained his decision to retire from the international stage.
“The play for the Algerian national team was an exceptional and beautiful thing, and it gave me unforgettable feelings. But I feel that the right moment has come to say goodbye, after I have given everything I can for my country,” he said.
He stressed that wearing the Algeria shirt had been one of the defining experiences of his career, describing it as a privilege that had marked him both professionally and personally.
Mandi’s announcement follows Algeria’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, making his decision a symbolic closing of a chapter that has seen him at the heart of the national side’s defence for years.
Algerian FA tribute to record appearance holder
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) moved quickly to pay tribute to Mandi’s contribution, highlighting his status as the most-capped player in the history of the Desert Warriors.
The federation thanked him for his years of service, celebrating his “record number of appearances” and underlining the consistency and leadership he displayed whenever he represented his country.
With 122 caps and eight international goals, Mandi stands alone at the top of Algeria’s all-time appearance list, a statistic that underscores how indispensable he has been to successive national team coaches.
He is the second high-profile figure from the current generation to call time on his international career after captain Riyad Mahrez also stepped away from the national team, signalling the beginning of a transition period for Algeria.

Mandi’s international journey began on 5 March 2014, when he made his first appearance for Algeria in a friendly against Slovenia. The match ended in a 2-0 victory for the North Africans and marked the start of a long and influential spell in the national side.
Over the following years, he became a mainstay in defence, trusted in high-pressure fixtures at continental and global level, and regularly entrusted with leadership responsibilities on the pitch.
