Albon celebrates South Africa visit with Williams and calls for F1’s return to the continent

Williams confirmed on Wednesday (22) that Alexander Albon will attend the finale of the team’s promotional tour in South Africa. The driver will participate in activities in Johannesburg—the final stop of a roadshow that brought one of the team’s race cars for demonstration runs across Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg, bringing Formula 1 closer to South African fans.

The visit carries historical significance for Williams, as it marks the first time in over three decades that an active race driver for the team officially participates in an event in the country. South Africa last hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1993, when Alain Prost took victory at Kyalami behind the wheel of the FW15C.

“I’ve always wanted to go to South Africa. It’s a beautiful country, and South African fans are among the most passionate in motorsport. Bringing Formula 1 to the fans and doing it in a different way is at the core of what Williams is about, so this is exactly the kind of initiative we love being part of,” he said.

“It’s incredible to be the first Williams driver to return here since Alain Prost’s win in 1993. I’d love to see a race back in Africa, and I’ll definitely be back when I can,” he concluded.

South Africa is the latest destination for Williams’ “Fan Zones.” Over the past two years, the team has taken this initiative to cities like Melbourne, Austin, and Las Vegas, drawing over 340,000 visitors to free, immersive experiences designed to connect F1 with fans who might otherwise never have the chance to attend a Grand Prix in person.

Formula 1 returns on July 24–26 in Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the 11th round of the 2026 season.
