SEATTLE (ABS News) — Bill Gates is sounding an alarm on artificial intelligence, warning in a new essay that the technology is transforming the U.S. labor market at a pace with no historical precedent, putting millions of jobs at risk within years, not decades.
The Microsoft co-founder said AI is advancing at what he called a “mind-blowing rate,” leaving workers and policymakers far less time to adapt than during past technological shifts. In the roughly 6,000-word essay posted to his personal website this week, Gates wrote that AI will reshape law, customer service, medicine, software and manufacturing within about 10 years, rather than across generations as earlier technologies did.
“There will be some new jobs,” Gates wrote, “but without the right policies, there will be far fewer than exist today.”
Gates said white-collar roles including sales, customer support, software engineering and paralegal work are among the most exposed, as companies increasingly hand off tasks like data analysis and loan assessment to AI systems capable of near error-free output. He said the shift accelerates once AI can operate without a human checking its work, since companies will have every financial incentive to let it.
The warning extends beyond desk jobs. Gates said “smart” robots will begin competing with humans on physical tasks in construction and hospitality by the end of the decade, as robotics costs fall and capabilities rise.
Entry-level workers face particular exposure, Gates said, along with lower-wage employees most likely to be replaced by cheaper automated alternatives. He proposed taxing AI use and robotic labor similarly to payroll taxes as one way to slow displacement.

Gates’ essay lands as a pointed signal to workers who have not yet built any familiarity with AI tools. With Gates now projecting labor disruption on a decade-long timeline rather than a generational one, career and workforce experts have increasingly urged workers to treat basic AI fluency the way earlier generations treated computer literacy: a baseline requirement, not an optional skill. Employees who delay may find themselves competing for a shrinking pool of roles against both AI systems and better-prepared peers, rather than adapting on their own timeline.
