Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni (2nd R) and Taifa Group of Companies Chairman Rostam Azizi at State House (2nd L), Entebbe
President Yoweri Museveni has met Tanzanian businessman and Taifa Group of Companies Chairman Rostam Azizi at State House, Entebbe.
“Today at State House Entebbe, I met Mr. Rostam Azizi, Chairman of the Taifa Group of Companies,” Museveni announced on Friday.
The President did not disclose the agenda, details or outcome of the meeting.
The engagement comes just over two weeks after Azizi met the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, over the continued shutdown of Nation Media Group Uganda outlets, including NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor.
The July 1 meeting, held at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe, was also attended by Azizi’s son, Saam Aziz, and Georgia Mutagaywa, the Chief of Staff at Taarifa Limited. No official resolution from those discussions was publicly announced.
Azizi chairs Taifa Group, whose business interests span telecommunications, energy, mining, media, logistics and infrastructure across East and Southern Africa.
His company, Taarifa Limited, entered into an agreement to acquire the controlling 54.08 per cent stake in Nation Media Group previously held through the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development’s investment structure.
Friday’s State House meeting is expected to attract attention because of its timing, although neither Museveni nor State House indicated whether the closure of NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor formed part of the discussions.
