CAF has invited all 54 Member Associations to submit expressions of interest under a newly introduced bidding framework aimed at improving transparency, governance and accountability

The race to host the next three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially begun after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) opened the bidding process for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 tournaments

Countries may bid individually or jointly, with the continental body expected to assess each application against a comprehensive set of technical, financial and governance requirements

The announcement comes as East Africa prepares to stage the Africa Cup of Nations PAMOJA 2027, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from Saturday, 19 June to Saturday, 17 July 2027

It will be the first time the region hosts Africa’s premier football tournament and the first joint AFCON to be staged by the three neighbouring nations

CAF’s latest move also introduces a revised competition calendar that will see a major senior men’s national team tournament held every year, except during FIFA World Cup years

Under the new schedule, AFCON will retain its place on the calendar while the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be played in the intervening years, ensuring annual continental football competition

The new approach is expected to boost the commercial value of CAF competitions, increase exposure for African players and national teams, and provide Member Associations with more regular opportunities to compete at the highest level

To manage the selection of future hosts, CAF has unveiled a detailed bidding framework developed with the support of global consulting firm PwC, alongside independent technical, financial and legal advisers

Prospective hosts will be evaluated on stadium infrastructure, transport, accommodation, security, medical services, sustainability, governance and financial guarantees

According to CAF, the framework is intended to ensure that host nations are selected through a transparent and credible process while delivering tournaments capable of matching the growing global stature of African football

AFCON has continued to strengthen its global appeal, attracting more than 3.2 billion cumulative television viewers and generating over 6 billion digital views worldwide

Those figures have increased the competition among countries seeking to stage the continent’s flagship football tournament

For Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, however, the immediate focus remains on delivering a successful PAMOJA 2027 tournament

The three countries are investing heavily in stadium upgrades, training facilities, transport infrastructure and hospitality services ahead of welcoming Africa’s biggest football spectacle

A successful tournament in East Africa could further strengthen the case for joint hosting on the continent, with CAF’s latest invitation reaffirming that multi-country bids remain a key part of its long-term strategy
