Members of theCatholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria(CBCN) have called for renewed politics rooted in moral principles, urging political leaders and citizens to promote the common good, justice and responsible governance as they concluded their plenary meeting.
In a statement issued at the end of their 2026 second Plenary Assembly held at Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre in theDiocese of Osogbo,the Bishops underlined the need for politics that respects human dignity.
“We vigorously repeat our call for a renewed politics that focuses on moral principles, the promotion of human life and dignity, and the pursuit of the common good,” the Bishops said in the statement following their September 10 -18 Plenary.
The Bishops linked respect for human dignity to the protection of human life, religious liberty and the pursuit of social justice, grounding these principles in Catholic Social Teaching.
“The dignity of the human person is the very foundation of human rights and religious liberty,” they said, drawing from Dignitatis Humanae. They described human dignity as an “inalienable gift” rooted in the belief that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, adding that it is “intrinsic, unconditional, and inviolable.”
