Vipers SC head coach Denis Lavagne has called for togetherness from both his players and supporters as the Ugandan champions prepare to launch their CAF Champions League campaign against FC Nouadhibou.

The Venoms host the Mauritanian giants at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Saturday in the first leg of a crucial preliminary-round tie, with a strong home performance key to their hopes of progressing to the next stage.

Lavagne believes Vipers have done enough during pre-season to approach the continental assignment with confidence, having used a series of international friendly matches to sharpen his squad.

“We have prepared well ahead of this game. We have won several games against international opponents. In football, you always have to prepare and be ready,” Lavagne said.

The French coach, however, expects a demanding encounter against a Nouadhibou side with considerable experience on the continent.

The Mauritanian club featured in the CAF Champions League group stage during the 2023/24 campaign and are regular participants in African club competitions.

With the stakes high, Lavagne has stressed the importance of Vipers staying compact and focused throughout the two-legged contest, starting with Saturday’s home fixture.

“It’s going to be a very difficult game because of the level we are at, but we are ready, and I am sure the players have been motivated enough,” he added.

Vipers have already had a taste of international competition during their preparations, including a meeting with Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, experiences Lavagne believes have helped the squad get ready for the intensity of continental football.

The coach now wants the Kitende faithful to play their part by turning St Mary’s Stadium into a stronghold for the Venoms.

“We call upon the fans to come and back up the team because I have told the players the same thing: that we need to be united if we are to get something positive from the game.”

For Vipers, the immediate objective will be to take control of the tie at home, with a positive result and a clean sheet providing a valuable platform ahead of the return leg in Mauritania.
