BishopJamal Boulos Sleiman Daibesof the only Catholic Diocese in Djibouti has called for extreme measures to safeguard the environment, noting that the Horn of Africa nation is also grappling with climate change.
Speaking to ACI Africa on the sidelines of aLaudato Si’ Movement Africa(LSM) workshop that was organized as a side event to theJuly 19–26 Plenary Assemblyof theAssociation of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa(AMECEA), Bishop Daibes said there is “a very hard climate” in Djibouti.
“We need to work. We need to do something, whatever we can, for the environment,” the Local Ordinary of the lone Catholic Diocese in Djibouti, who also serves as Apostolic Administrator of theCatholic Diocese of Mogadiscioin Somalia, said during the Friday, July 17 interview.
In Djibouti, Bishop Daibes said that the Catholic Church, despite constituting only a tiny minority in the Muslim-majority country, has made significant efforts, mainly aimed at conserving the environment.
