The Economic Freedom Fighters Party (EFF) has laid a parliamentary ethics complaint against the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Mark Burke, following allegations that Kastelo, the company he founded, has been investigated by the Reserve Bank for apparent exchange control violations.

Last week, the African National Congress (ANC) also pressed criminal charges against Burke over transactions worth R4 billion, which led to the freezing of one of the Kastelo company accounts.

While Burke said he no longer plays an active role in the company and stepped down as its chairman in February, the EFF’s Omphile Maotwe alleges he has not been transparent in Parliament about being probed by the Reserve Bank.

“When you are a member of Parliament, you have to act selflessly, you have to act with integrity, you have to act with honesty. You would then say he has the upper hand because a lot of people look up to leaders to do some business with them. So, he acted unlawfully, and that’s why we are reporting him to the ethics committee of Parliament to take the matter forward,” she said.

Maotwe said the EFF does not believe the DA has gone far enough by removing Burke from representing the party on Parliament’s finance committees.

The Red Berets said that they will not stop at only lodging an ethics complaint against him.

“We are going to lay criminal charges against him, and then we are also going to report him also to the SA Revenue Service because we believe with R4 billion, it could be that there’s money that he’s owing money to SARS that’s not been disclosed.”
