Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) Dynamos FC(DeMbare) have walked the talk on racial diversity.

DeMbare have signed winger Cullen English-Brown—probably the only white player one in the Castle Lager PSL this season.

Dynamos unveiled English-Brown on Friday, joining a rare band of white players to have graced the Castle Lager PSL.

“Dynamos Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Cullem English Brown, who joins the Glamour Boys and will wear the number 8 jersey,” reads the statement.

English Brown joins rare group of players

The winger is among the very few white players to play in Zimbabwe’s elite league alongside Bruce Grobbelaar, Mark Watson, Grahame Boyle, Duncan Ellison and Ryan Harrison, son to former Harare City FC coach Mark Harrison.

Ryan Harrison signed for Harare City FC, then coached by his father Mark Harrison, in 2018.

New Zimbabwe website edition of April 26, 2018, quoted the father as bemoaning the lack of diversity in the country’s top league and South Africa’s PSL.

Mark Harrison’s opinion on lack of diversity

“Even in South Africa, there are not too many white players in football. I think football in Africa is viewed as a black sport, the black population plays soccer while the whites seem to prefer rugby to soccer, and it is a shame,” Harrison was quoted.

Mark Harrison also coached South African sides Chippa United and Lamontville Golden Arrows between 2013 and 2014.

English-Brown, who was previously on the books of other Zimbabwean teams Chicken Inn, Herentals FC and Harare City, becomes the first white player for DeMbare since Independence in 1980
