ISTANBUL (Türkiye) – All of the anticipation and preparation and excitement of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2026 come together for the big moment – the Final. United States have one last hurdle standing in the way of an eighth consecutive undefeated title, and that is history-making Serbia

One of those teams will be leaving Istanbul with gold medals around their necks

VOTE: Who will win the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2026 title?

Many of the players who will take the court at the Basketball Development Center have looked ahead to this moment for the past two years – the Americans going through and winning the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2025 and Serbia claiming the crown at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2025

USA reached the Final after dominating the second half against Australia in a 114-65 victory – outscoring the Oceanians 65-30 in the last 20 minutes. While USA are used to being in this moment, Serbia find themselves in unchartered territory as the play in their first Final

Serbia, whose only medal was bronze in 2014, prevailed 76-71 in an epic all-European Semi-Finals thriller over Türkiye, remaining focused and concentrated despite a U17 World Cup record crowd of 8,348 fans

In the end, the question all along will finally be answered: Can any nation rise to the occasion in 2026 and finally hand the USA their first loss. The rest of the world’s final hope is Serbia. Or will USA make it 8 for 8

    Key Matchup

Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje vs Nikola Kusturica

Sure, this might not be a direct one-on-one matchup we will see too often during the game, but these two players have a special bond. They played together this season at Spanish powerhouse Barcelona and helped the club win a major European club youth competition with Boumtje Boumtje being named Most Valuable Player

Both players will likely be talking to their coaches about some ways they could possibly slow down the other. Both players are critical to their teams and Kusturica will probably be needed to step up to keep Serbia in the game

    X-factors

Knowing how strong USA are in the front court, Serbian captain Petar Bjelica will need to avoid foul trouble. The power forward has fouled out three times in six games, registering a combined 17 points and 24 efficiency in the those game. In the three games he stayed on the court until the end, Bjelica has averaged 12.0 points and 18.3 efficiency. Serbia will definitely need the good version of their captain

At the other end, USA head coach Scott Fitch will need to find a way to slow down Kusturica, and he will probably use a mix of CJ Rosser, AJ Williams, Asa Montgomery and Mason Collins

    Stats Don’t Lie

USA love to get out and run to get easy production with 32.8 points off turnovers and 45.3 fast break points per game. Serbia are not too bad at that game either though with 17.0 points per turnovers and 21.6 fast break points. Both teams take care of the ball quite well – ranking tied for second with 14.8 turnovers per game

In addition, the Serbs rank third in the competition with 19.6 offensive rebounds per game while USA are just one spot lower with 19.2 boards from the offensive glass

    Past Matchups

USA have amassed a 57-0 record in the history of the FIBA U17 World Cup and four of those wins have come against Serbia. The Americans won 112-75 and 93-61 in the group stages in 2010 and 2018, respectively. The other two showdowns were knockout games, USA winning 89-68 in the 2014 Semi-Finals and another USA victory 106-80 in the 2022 Quarter-Finals

    They Said

“You never take these for granted. There’s just not many of these games in the world that you ever get to be in and be a part of. Even though we’ve been in them before these kids haven’t been in a U17 gold medal game so it’s special. We’re gonna embrace it and we know we’re gonna have to play great

“Serbia started off slowly. They lost to Australia early and then they’ve been playing great ever since. They have some great individual players, they play well as a team. As a country we respect their basketball on a very high level. They’ve always been competitive. They always play hard, so we know it’ll be a real challenge.” – USA head coach Scott Fitch

“lt’s great getting a chance to play for gold and especially getting there on July 4th. That’s the day we represent our country. We won so that’s all we can ask for … I feel like a game is a basketball game is a basketball game no matter what we do. We always put in the work. We prepare and we’ll be ready.” – USA guard AJ Williams

“First of all, we need to recover and tomorrow again we will have motivation. We play against USA – the best guys in the world. And this is a chance for these guys to play against those guys and to show everything we know and what we can do. These guys are an amazing team, an amazing group – both as people and players. They always stay as a team and every time show their character. Everybody on this team is a very very big winner.” – Serbia head coach Stevan Mijovic

“USA is a great team. They win all their games by 50 points so we will try not to let them play their game. We will try to play our tempo and take the lead. This is the best thing in my current career, it’s great.” – Serbia guard Ognjen Simjanovski
