Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has been remembered as a quiet individual who possessed a big heart.
Adams was buried in his hometown of Stellenbosch on Saturday, two weeks after he was found dead at an apartment in Bo-Kaap.
Jayden Adams’ father, Juanito, wept as he paid tribute to his son, saying it was an honour to raise Jayden after spotting his footballing talent at a young age. He recounted encouraging him through the ups and downs of his football career.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe said the 25-year-old soccer talent occupied a special place in the hearts of those in the football fraternity and promised to support his family.
Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele believes Adams will be remembered as a quiet person who had a big heart, great talent, respect, and humility.
“He was a player who was outgoing, a player you could easily connect with,” said Mkhalele. “What is remarkable about him, as shy as he is, he was very respectful.”
Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana said that Adams was loved dearly by those at the club.
“He was one of the characters you’d always want to be around,” Kekana said. “It’s unfortunate that we lost such a young life. As a player, we used to enjoy watching him, he’d see the game differently. Not many South Africans know how to play the game like he used to, and that’s why he was so unique.”
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie condemned media speculation over Adams’ death, saying no one could lay the blame on his partner.
