Shivering, a pounding headache, fever and an aching body? There’s a good chance you’re battling this year’s flu.

The winter flu season is underway, with health authorities reporting increased influenza activity across several provinces.

While most people recover at home with rest and fluids, vulnerable groups are being urged to seek medical care early if symptoms worsen.

Speaking on CapeTalk/702, epidemiologist Dr Sibongile Walaza said the severity of illness varies from person to person.

“How it affects one person to the next can vary,” she said.

People who are pregnant, the elderly, or those living with underlying conditions such as heart disease or HIV are more likely to develop severe illness and should seek medical care sooner rather than later.

Walaza also said it’s important to remember that not every winter illness is the flu.

“Influenza is caused by the influenza virus, while the common cold is caused by other viruses,” she explained.

Although the symptoms can be similar, you’re likely to feel much worse with the flu, which generally causes more severe illness, including fever, body aches and a cough.

Wth the common cold, symptoms tend to be milder.

For most people, the best treatment is rest and staying hydrated.

However, those with severe influenza or underlying health conditions may require prescribed medication.

Walaza said the annual flu vaccine remains the best defence against serious illness.

“It’s currently the best thing we have in terms of preventing influenza,” she said.

She encouraged everyone, particularly those at higher risk, to get vaccinated every year.
