Over the next nine months, Doris Lebby, president of Love in Action, is planning to step away from the organization to take mission trips to Trinidad and Tobago, a twin-island nation in the Caribbean, and to Africa
Lebby will continue to serve as president of Love in Action — which she founded and has guided for eight years — and will conduct board meetings remotely. The faith-based organization, located in the Center for Community Impact, 818 University Ave., is dedicated to helping people who need support and assistance with spiritual and physical needs
For the last six months or so, Lebby has been feeling that “there’s going to be a new season, a new level in my life,” she said
After Everett Jones came on board as executive director of Love in Action in November, “I felt that call,” which led her to pursue mission work outside the U.S
She plans to leave for Trinidad and Tobago in early July and spend 10 days there, she said. It will be her third visit to that nation
As part of her work with Youth On A Mission, Lebby will be part of a group that delivers supplies and does “a lot of evangelism,” she said. “We help build things (and) do a lot of street work, helping the people on the streets.”
Her group will go into two prisons, meeting with men, women and juveniles, she said. “We do a lot of boots on the ground work as soon as we get there.”
They’ll also connect with leaders of a church to learn about the residents’ needs, she said
In September, Lebby plans to attend the Youth With A Mission’s Discipleship Training School in California to prepare for a trip to Africa, where she will live for the first two months in 2027
In Africa, working with the YWAM’s Gleanings For the Hungry division, her efforts will focus on addressing food shortages, she said, including teaching farming techniques to help people grow the food they need
In the years since Lebby earned a bachelor’s degree in human services and a master’s degree in social work, “I’ve been working in that area,” she said
She was in Seoul, Korea, in 2006 when she was called to be a missionary, she said. “So I’ve been doing mission work. But when Love in Action opened, I actually became like a full-time missionary; I call it ‘a missionary in my own backyard.’ ”
Because of her interest in social work, “it’s like I’ve always been called to people,” said Lebby, who worked with the Salvation Army and Community Action before retirement
She’s visited more than 30 countries, the majority of which were for mission work
“I just feel led to missions — loving God, loving His people,” Lebby said. “I love cultural things; when you come into Love in Action, (you see) all the different cultures. It’s just (that) God’s calling me to the nation — it’s expanding Love in Action.”
