Greece and Italy led Europe’s tourism rebound in early 2026 despite a challenging global backdrop.

Greece and Italy led Europe’s tourism rebound in early 2026 despite a challenging global backdrop. Greece topped all reporting destinations, with arrivals up 38% and travel spending surging 64.3%, indicating visitors spent significantly more per trip.

Italy followed with a 21% increase in arrivals, while spending rose just 4.3%, suggesting stronger visitor numbers but more restrained spending.

Malta ranked third, with arrivals up 16%. Strong air connectivity and efforts to boost off-season travel helped all three destinations spread tourism beyond the summer peak.

    Steady numbers across continent

The gains reflect Europe’s resilient tourism performance in Q2 2026, according to the European Travel Commission’s (ETC) European Tourism: Trends & Prospects report.

International arrivals to Europe rose 5.0% year over year, while overnight stays increased 4.8%.

Nearly 80% of reporting destinations recorded growth, with about one in five posting double-digit increases in arrivals.

The sector remained resilient despite weaker consumer confidence, rising costs, and disruption from the Middle East conflict, which affected flights between Europe and several mid- and long-haul markets.

    North takes crown

Northern Europe led all subregions, with arrivals up 10.0% and overnight stays up 8.4%.

Central and Eastern Europe also performed strongly, with arrivals rising 5.2% and overnight stays 6.9%, driven by travelers seeking new experiences and better value.

Southern and Mediterranean Europe posted the largest overall gains, with Malta, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain all recording strong growth.

    Conflict clips a few destinations

Not all destinations shared the gains. Cyprus saw the steepest decline, with arrivals down 17.9%, partly due to the timing of Easter and concerns about its proximity to the Middle East conflict.

Türkiye also slipped, with arrivals down 2.1% as demand for Europe and long-haul destinations weakened. Both were among the few destinations where arrivals and spending fell.

Air travel reflected the disruption. European Revenue Passenger Kilometers rose 7.0% in Q1 2026, including 8.0% in March, before slowing to 1.0% in April as the conflict affected long-haul routes.

    Cheap, close wins the day

Travelers are becoming more price-conscious. In the latest Travel Industry Monitor survey, 48% of Europeans cited affordability and value as a top opportunity for Europe in Q2, up from 32% in Q1.

Leisure travel is expected to remain a spending priority, accounting for 13.0% of consumer spending in key Europeanding in major non-European markets is also projected to edge up from 7.5% to 7.7%

Nearby and off-peak travel is gaining momentum. Interest in Southern and Mediterranean Europe from June through November rose to 61%, with September bookings increasing as travelers sought to avoid peak heat and crowds.

    Green talk, slower action

Sustainability is playing a larger role in trip planning, with Google Trends showing more searches for “sustainable tourism” in 2026 than in 2025.

Intent doesn’t always translate into action. Only 41% of consumers said they would change how they travel because of environmental concerns.

Miguel Sanz, president of the European Travel Commission, said the quarter demonstrated the sector’s resilience.

“European tourism has continued to show resilience in Q2 2026, despite a more uncertain global environment,” he remarked. “Travel remains a priority for consumers, but the way people travel is changing.”

He added that affordability, safety, proximity, and value are shaping travel decisions, while destinations must stay competitive and spread visitor flows across regions and seasons.

    New borders enter frame

The strong Q2 results coincided with major changes at Europe’s borders.

Europe’s year-to-date increase in arrivals suggests that the Entry/Exit System (EES), the new biometric registration system for non-EU nationals, did not significantly affect travel during its rollout.

Price sensitivity could become more important when the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) launches. It will require visa-exempt non-EU travelers to pay a €20 fee and complete a pre-trip authorization.

ETIAS has no confirmed launch date, so its impact remains uncertain. However, the added cost and paperwork could matter more as travelers become increasingly price-conscious.

The growing preference for nearby destinations also puts border efficiency in focus, as EES checks at first entry could contribute to longer queues.

One indicator suggests limited impact so far. Leisure travel spending in key non-European markets rose, indicating that travelers most affected by EES and ETIAS have not been deterred.

    Steady skies, shifting ground

European tourism grew steadily in early 2026, led by Greece and Italy. Mediterranean and northern destinations posted strong gains despite disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.

The picture for the months ahead is a more selective traveler, weighing cost, safety, and timing before booking. Whether tightening borders start to shape those choices is the open question hanging over the rest of the year.
