H M Sultan Haitham launches Unesco prize for intangible cultural heritage
Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, His Majesty, made an official visit to the French Republic, during which he stopped at the Paris headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) on Monday.
Upon his arrival at the organization’s main office, His Majesty was greeted by Dr. Khaled El Enany, Unesco’s Director-General; Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibani, the Minister of Education; Amina bint Salem Al Balushi, Oman’s Permanent Delegate to Unesco; and various other senior officials. These dignitaries extended a warm welcome and expressed their honor at hosting him.
Subsequently, His Majesty toured the Oman and Unesco exhibition. This display highlights the long-standing partnership between Oman and the organization, alongside significant accomplishments in culture, education, and heritage.
During his welcome address, El Enany praised the Sultanate’s civilizational and cultural contributions to fostering dialogue and mutual understanding among global communities.
Expressing thanks for the warm reception, His Majesty noted that the Director-General’s speech underscored the profound historical connections between Oman and Unesco.
“The Sultanate of Oman has steadfastly contributed to supporting Unesco’s mission and objectives since its accession in 1972, guided by its conviction that the safeguarding of heritage, the advancement of knowledge and investment in human capital are fundamental pillars for building the future,” His Majesty said.
“In furtherance of Oman’s dedication to safeguarding living heritage as a shared human memory and a bridge for dialogue and understanding among peoples, we are pleased to announce today the launch of the Unesco‑Sultan Haitham Prize for Intangible Cultural Heritage.”
This award is designed to recognize the work of various entities, including institutions, organizations, centers, scientific and cultural institutes, and both governmental and non-governmental bodies engaged in the field of intangible cultural heritage. His Majesty further stated, “This initiative builds upon our continued support for environmental conservation efforts, scientific research and the advancement of knowledge through the hosting of Unesco‑affiliated chairs.”
Following his speech, His Majesty the Sultan inscribed his name in the Distinguished Visitors’ Book, expressing profound gratitude for the organization’s significant efforts in promoting educational values, advancing knowledge, and protecting global cultural heritage.
To conclude the visit, a commemorative present was given to His Majesty. In return, he presented the organization with a replica of the Shabab Oman vessel.
