US airlines are marking America’s 250th anniversary with special aircraft liveries, decals and themed onboard touches. Here are the standout airline semiquincentennial designs

    United Airlines: Stars and Stripes

United Airlines unveiled a striking America250 livery, with a custom “Stars and Stripes” design painted on a Boeing 787-10 and a Boeing 737-800 for the festivities. The red, white and blue aeroplane marks both the US semiquincentennial and United’s commitment to supporting the military through its pilot hiring programme.

“Painted in Amarillo, Texas, the bold red, white and blue design features 50 stars representing states across the country, while diagonal red and white stripes reflect the energy and momentum of a nation always moving forward. Both aircraft will include a commemorative plaque dedicated to United’s active-duty service members and veterans who have selflessly served our country,” United said in its announcement

“America is the greatest country in the world, and we’re proud to play a role in celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary,” said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby. “For 100 years of that history, United has been a pioneering US company, investing in people and communities across the country.” United employs over 8,300 military veterans, of whom 1,500 are active members of the National Guard and Reserve forces. “Our ‘Stars and Stripes’ livery pays tribute to their service to our country that continues to make America strong,” Kirby concluded.

Southwest Airlines: Independence One and Liberty One

Southwest Airlines introduced Independence One, a dedicated America250 aircraft unveiled as part of its official partnership with America250, the organisation leading the nation’s Semiquincentennial commemoration. It joins Liberty One, another special American flag livery unveiled this year and Freedom One, which has been in service since 2021.

Independence One features design elements that commemorate the nation’s 250-year history, including:

    • Red, white, and blue paint scheme with 1776 written in giant quill script
    • The key phrase, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” from the Declaration of Independence
    • Thirteen stars on the fuselage represent the thirteen original colonies
    • A circle of stars on each engine cowling, reflecting the original Betsy Ross flag
    • Special “1776” tail number
    • America250 nose and winglet decal

“With our new Independence One and Liberty One aircraft, we honour this important milestone in our nation’s history and the generations of Customers that Southwest has carried. They join our Freedom One aircraft in uniting families, bringing service members home, flying entrepreneurs chasing an opportunity, and helping communities stay connected,” said Bob Jordan, President & Chief Executive Officer at Southwest Airlines. “Southwest is proud to be a part of the 250th national celebration and to honour the same spirit of innovation, resilience, and optimism that has shaped our country and our Company.”

    American Airlines: America250 commemorative aircraft

American Airlines unveiled a special America250 commemorative aircraft at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as part of a dual celebration: America’s 250th anniversary and American’s own centennial year.

As the airline’s standard livery already features red, white and blue and includes design elements of the US flag with stripes on the tail, the carrier took a more subdued approach than United and Southwest, marking the celebrations with a special America250 emblem painted on the fuselage. American Airlines is also an official partner of America250.

“For a century, American has helped move our country forward by connecting people, places and possibilities,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. “As we celebrate our centennial, it’s especially meaningful to unveil an aircraft that honours our country’s 250th anniversary and the shared story of progress, perseverance and innovation that defines both America and our airline.”

After the unveiling, the aircraft flew from DFW to Miami before operating American’s inaugural Miami–Caracas service.

JetBlue: Vets in Blue America 250 update

JetBlue marked the occasion by updating its existing “Vets in Blue” aircraft with a commemorative “250” design. The aircraft was unveiled at Reagan National Airport, with JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty and US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy present, and was operated by an all-veteran JetBlue flight crew.

“As we mark America’s 250th anniversary, JetBlue is proud to celebrate the spirit of service, community and connection that has shaped our country,” said Joanna Geraghty, chief executive officer, JetBlue. “Our ‘Vets in Blue’ aircraft has long served as a tribute to the veterans and service members who inspire us, and adding this special 250 design gives us a meaningful way to honour this historic milestone. From the onboard video to the volunteer work our crewmembers will take part in, we’re honouring the people who have defended our nation and continue to protect the ideals that move us forward.”

JetBlue is also releasing a limited edition of 1,776 trading cards featuring the special livery.

Delta Air Lines: America 250 Boeing 757 decal

Delta Air Lines has added a special America 250 aircraft decal to a domestic Boeing 757-200, ship 5653, built in Renton, Washington. Delta says the aircraft has been flying daily between key US hubs and high-volume markets since Memorial Day.

The airline has also launched a series of 250 anniversary activities, including a dedicated in-flight entertainment programme and a collaboration with mission-driven bags and accessories brand R. Riveter available in the Delta Shop.

“The exclusive collection features six bags — all handmade by military spouses,” the airline states.

Alaska Airlines: Honouring Those Who Serve decals

Alaska Airlines marked its sponsorship of America250 on its existing Honouring Those Who Serve special livery aircraft. Four of these aircraft will carry a special America250 decal near the boarding door through the end of 2026.

“Our independence wouldn’t exist without their service,” said Megan Ouellette, vice president of public and government affairs, Alaska Airlines. “We’re proud to reflect that as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of our democracy.”

Allegiant reveals its America 250 livery on the eve of the 4th of July

Allegiant has also joined the America250 lineup with a special-edition red, white and blue livery celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary. The design adds another patriotic aircraft to what is quickly becoming a busy summer of semiquincentennial liveries across the US airline industry

The aircraft is expected to fly across Allegiant’s domestic network, giving travellers and aports around the country. It is a fitting addition from a carrier whose network is built around connecting smaller communities and leisure destinations across the United States

From decals to flying flags, US carriers celebrate the birth of a nation

While some airlines have added decals to existing special liveries or added a 250 design element to existing livery designs, United and Southwest went further, with full flag liveries to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial.

Each of these designs stands out in celebration, though Southwest gets extra credit for the flourish of its “1776” and “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” script.
