Legal education will be modernised and Kerala will be turned into a hub of higher education, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has said.

He was speaking at a function organised to hand over appointment orders to 35 Assistant Professors in government law colleges here on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister said new and novel courses would be launched keeping in mind the changing requirements of the job sector. Besides prioritising courses that could ensure good employment opportunities for students, steps were on to firm up ties between educational institutions and the industrial sector, he said.

To tap into the expanding opportunities thrown up by the plans for a unified port city, new areas such as maritime law would be made part of legal education, he said.

Reminding teachers that they had a huge responsibility, the Chief Minister urged the new appointees to become a model to students and society.

Minister for Higher Education Roji M. John presided over the function. Higher Education Principal Secretary B. Ashok was present.
