Jabalpur: A woman constable of Madhya Pradesh has hoisted the Indian national flag on Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. On August 21 at 9:07 AM, Varsha Patel reached the summit at 18,510 feet (5,642 metres) and unfurled both the national flag and the Madhya Pradesh Police flag.
Varsha is posted as a constable with Jabalpur Police and is a resident of the Garha area of the city. From her childhood, she has shown her interest in sports and has represented the country as a national-level baseball player. She has won over 10 medals in various competitions.
After joining the force, with departmental permission, she took up mountaineering. In 2024, she scaled Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak of the Australian continent, becoming the first woman constable from Madhya Pradesh Police to achieve that feat. The successful climb of Elbrus marks another major milestone in her international mountaineering journey.
The Elbrus expedition began on August 11. In a statement, Varsha said that during the campaign, adverse weather, icy winds and extreme cold forced the team to wait for several days for favourable conditions. After the weather improved on August 20 and 21, the team began the final climb.
She said the climb tested their endurance at every step. She now aims to conquer the highest peaks on all seven continents. After Elbrus, her next target is Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.
“Mountaineering for me is not just about adventure. It is a resolve to carry the national flag to the highest points of the world,” she said. The expedition was organised under the leadership of NSY Outdoors and was led by mountaineer Narendra Singh Yadav.
