    Geopolitical developments
are emerging as an important factor in the future of Africa’s fintech sector,
with experts at the MTN Group Fintech Summit 2026 examining how global
political and economic trends could influence the continent’s digital economy.

On the first day of the
summit, Professor Richard Calland of the Wits School of Governance discussed
the major geopolitical trends shaping 2026 and their potential implications for
    Africa’s digital economy.

    The session explored the
relationship between geopolitics, policy, regulation and economic confidence as
African countries continue to expand their fintech ecosystems.

    As fintech adoption grows
across the continent, participants examined the importance of understanding the
external forces that can influence investment, regulatory environments and the
    resilience of digital businesses.

    The discussions highlighted
the need for African fintech stakeholders to remain responsive to changes in
the global economic and political environment while building digital systems
capable of operating with greater resilience and long-term purpose.

    The session forms part of
the broader discussions at the MTN Group Fintech Summit, which has brought
together fintech leaders, innovators, partners and industry experts to examine
the future of financial services and the role of digital technology in expanding
    economic participation across Africa.

    The summit is focusing on
how stronger regulatory frameworks, digital infrastructure and collaboration
can support the continued growth of fintech while helping African digital
ecosystems withstand emerging economic and geopolitical pressures.
