One year since Mkhwanazi’s exposé of corruption allegations within law enforcement

Monday marks exactly a year since KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations of political interference in the criminal justice system

His claims sparked national debate, prompted multiple investigations and renewed calls for accountability within law enforcement

One year ago, Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations shook South Africa and ignited a national reckoning over organised crime and corruption

Within days, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the claims

The political fallout was swift: Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was placed on leave, Firoz Cachalia was appointed as the acting minister and the commission began hearing evidence from senior police officials and other witnesses

The commission’s first interim report led to referrals for criminal investigation and recommendations for disciplinary action, which Ramaphosa accepted

Mkhwanazi’s allegations also triggered wider criminal and disciplinary investigations within the South African Police Service (SAPS), resulting in suspensions, arrests and probes into alleged corruption, procurement irregularities and organised crime links

Parliament also launched a parallel investigation, expanding scrutiny of the allegations and the integrity of South Africa’s law enforcement institutions

Yet despite significant consequences over the past year, many of Mkhwanazi’s allegations arguably remain untested in court, with the Madlanga Commission continuing its work ahead of its final report later in 2026

Civil society organisations and governance experts continue to call for greater transparency and accountability, arguing that public confidence in the justice system depends on decisive action
