Outokumpu Stainless USA to install 180‑ton twin ladle furnace at Calvert plant

22 Jul 2026 10:02 reported by Customer service

    AAA
Outokumpu Stainless USA has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to upgrade a ladle treatment station at its Calvert, Alabama plant into a 180‑ton twin ladle furnace, scheduled for start-up in March 2028.

The new unit will replace equipment from 2012 and add electrical heating capacity after the argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) process, improving temperature control, flexibility, and productivity while reducing energy use and carbon emissions.

To ensure a smooth integration, the project will utilize existing plant layout and foundations.

Supply includes mechanical and electrical systems, automated argon lancing equipment, a hydraulic system, Level 1 automation, a power solution, and the Melt Expert electrode control system.

The Calvert plant melts up to 100% stainless steel scrap in a 160‑ton EAF and processes steel in a 180‑ton AOD converter.
