Google CEO Sundar Pichai
Google CEO Sundar Pichai once said that artificial intelligence (AI) will have a bigger impact on humanity than some of history’s greatest inventions. Speaking at a town hall event in 2019, Sundar Pichai said AI is “probably the most important thing humanity has ever worked on” and described it as being “more profound than electricity or fire.” During the discussion, Pichai said AI has the potential to transform society in ways that go beyond earlier technological breakthroughs.”AI is one of the most important things humanity is working on. It is more profound than, I dunno, electricity or fire,” Pichai said.When interviewer Kara Swisher questioned the comparison, saying, “Fire? Fire is pretty good,” Sundar Pichai stood by his view.”Well, it kills people, too,” he replied. “We have learned to harness fire for the benefits of humanity but we had to overcome its downsides too. So my point is, AI is really important, but we have to be concerned about it.”
AI already powers everyday Google services
Sundar Pichai then said people already use AI every day, often without realizing it. He then pointed to Google Translate, image search and Google Photos as examples of AI-powered tools used by billions of people.“AI is just making computers more intelligent and being able to do a wide variety of tasks,” he said.The Google CEO also said AI could help address some of the world’s biggest problems, including healthcare. “AI holds the potential for some of the biggest advances we are going to see,” he said, adding that the technology could play a role in solving diseases such as cancer.At the same time, Sundar Pichai then stated that concerns about AI are valid. “It is right to be concerned, absolutely, you have to worry about it otherwise you are not going to solve it,” he said.
