Kenya, July 31, 2026 – The Government has announced fresh investments in the recruitment, training and welfare of wildlife rangers as part of an ambitious plan to strengthen conservation and protect Kenya’s multi-billion-shilling tourism industry.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said the State will enhance the operational capacity of rangers through modern technology, improved welfare and increased recruitment to safeguard the country’s wildlife re

Speaking during the national World Ranger Day celebrations at the Tsavo Conservation Area in Taita Taveta County on Friday, Miano described rangers as the backbone of Kenya’s conservation efforts and key drivers of the tourism sector, which generates more than Sh500 billion annually and supports over 1.5 million jobs.

“Our rangers are not only protectors of wildlife; they are protectors of Kenya’s future. Every investment we make in their welfare, training and operational capacity is an investment in our economy, our tourism industry and the natural heritage we will pass on to future generations,” Miano said.

The announcement comes as Kenya joined the rest of the world in marking World Ranger Day 2026 under the theme “Rangers: Guardians of a Changing World,” amid growing pressure to combat poaching, climate change and human-wildlife conflict.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga hailed rangers serving in national parks, marine reserves, county protected areas and community conservancies, saying their dedication has been central to Kenya’s conservation success.

He revealed that since 2023, 3,608 officers have completed professional training at the KWS Law Enforcement Academy in Manyani, while 1,274 rangers and 137 cadets have been recruited to reinforce conservation operations across the country.

Prof. Kanga said the Government has also invested heavily in drones, aircraft, patrol boats, operational vehicles and EarthRanger technology to improve surveillance and rapid response to wildlife threats.

“Behind every thriving wildlife population and every conservation success story stands a ranger whose courage, discipline and commitment safeguard Kenya’s natural heritage,” he said.

During the celebrations, outstanding rangers from KWS and partner conservancies were honoured for exemplary service, courage and professionalism, while special tribute was paid to officers who have been injured or lost their lives in the line of duty.

World Ranger Day, observed annually on July 31, recognizes the vital role played by wildlife rangers in protecting biodiversity, preserving ecosystems and sustaining Kenya’s tourism industry, one of the country’s leading foreign exchange earners.
