The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has confirmed that members of its technical team are attending a four-day workshop in Pretoria this week.

This comes as <a href="https://abs<a href="https://absafricatv.com/what-phones-in-africa-taught-the-world-about-poverty/” title=”What phones in Africa taught the world about poverty”>africatv.com/south-africa-anti-immigration-protest-ova-300-more-nigerians-dey-on-dia-way-back-home-from-south-africa-wat-next/” title=”South Africa anti-immigration protest: Ova 300 more Nigerians dey on dia way back home from South Africa – wat next?”>South Africa steps up its readiness for any possible imported cases of the deadly virus.

While there are currently no confirmed Ebola infections in South Africa, health officials said preparation remains critical as the outbreak in Central Africa continues.

In a written response to Eyewitness News, the NICD confirmed its technical team would remain at the training workshop until Thursday.

The institute is home to one of only two biosafety level four laboratories in Africa.

These high-containment facilities are equipped to safely test some of the world’s most dangerous pathogens, including Ebola.

The laboratory also provides specialised testing support to other countries in the region, making it a key part of Africa’s disease surveillance network.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said most regional countries rely on local expertise.

“So most of the countries around, if they suspect somebody has got Ebola, they’re going to bring the samples to the NICD because it is the centre that can handle very deadly pathogens.”

The training forms part of a broader national effort to ensure South Africa’s scientists, laboratories, and healthcare system are ready should the virus reach the region.
