India was among four markets included in the pilot; system has already processed more than 216,000 applications

South <a href="https://absafricatv.com/the-uneven-path-to-high-speed-connectivity-in-west-africa/” title=”The Uneven Path to High-Speed Connectivity in West Africa”>Africa has formally launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, taking another step towards a faster and more digitally driven entry process for international visitors. The system was officially launched at OR Tambo International Airport on August 12 by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

For the Indian travel trade, the development is particularly relevant. India was one of four markets—along with China, Indonesia and Mexico—covered in the initial ETA pilot, ahead of South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

The digital process allows eligible travellers to create an online profile, verify their contact details, scan their passport and submit a selfie. Biometric verification and automated security checks are then used to assess the application before travel.

South Africa says the system is aimed at making legitimate travel faster and more predictable while strengthening immigration controls. During the pilot, more than 216,000 applications were processed and over 6,100 fraudulent applications were identified and rejected.

Approved travellers can receive their authorisation digitally, while facial verification at immigration is used to match the traveller with their identity documents on arrival. The upgraded electronic movement-control system is being deployed at OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka and Lanseria international airports.

South Africa is also working towards linking the system with airport e-gates, with the longer-term objective of creating a more seamless digital immigration experience.

For the country’s tourism sector, the reform has a clear economic objective. South Africa expects easier travel procedures to support tourism, business travel, investment and longer visitor stays. The country’s tourism leadership has previously estimated that the wider ETA rollout could contribute an additional 80,000–100,000 international arrivals annually.

The system will progressively be extended to more nationalities and, over time, to additional visa categories.
