Stefan Gijssels: Closing the Divide in Cancer Screening Across Europe

“The European Cancer Organisation launched its European Cancer Screening Policy Index 2026, which can be downloaded here.
Belgium scores an abysmal 54% on the index, compared to 80% in Finland and Denmark. Many other countries unfortunately have even lower scores. Screening saves lives. Screening saves money. The only problem is a lack of integration of good practices in national and regional policies, and as is the case in Belgium, the investments at regional level lead to savings in the federal budget, so there is no incentive for the regions to invest in prevention. Always open to discuss solutions with our politicians, but they are not very keen on listening to the patient perspectives, with some exceptions.”
