Telecom Egypt has decided not to sell a majority stake in its Regional Data Center Hub (RDH) to Helios Investment Partners

Telecom Egypt’s board has withdrawn from a deal to sell a majority stake in its data center subsidiary, Regional Data Center Hub (RDH), to Helios Investment Partners. The operator said it canceled the agreement because conditions for the proposed transaction, which was announced on September 7, 2025, haven’t been met.

Helios Investments would have acquired a 75% to 80% interest in the unit that owns Telecom Egypt’s Regional Data Center Hub under the terms of the now cancelled agreement.

The company said it had instead decided to carve out RDH as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

“This entity will include a specialized team possessing the necessary technical and commercial expertise, enabling greater focus on developing this sector, expanding its operations, and accelerating the pace of growth to capitalize on the promising opportunities in the data center market, both locally and globally,” Telecom Egypt said.

It said it had made the decision because it’s convinced that the global data center sector is among the fastest-growing segments. It also noted the Egyptian market is witnessing rising demand, which requires a specialized operating model to keep pace and maximize the benefits.

Telecom Egypt said it continues to provide data center services while expanding its operations across Egypt.

According to the company, these efforts strengthen its position in the sector, enhance the value of the asset and support long-term returns for shareholders while safeguarding customer interests and supporting future growth.

    African data center expansion

Telecom Egypt’s change of mind comes as many African companies are building more data centers in markets they operate in, especially in the first half of 2026.

Earlier this week, data centeroperator Raxio Group surpassed $380 million in committed capitalas it eyes its next phase of growth following a sixfold surge in contracted capacity this year.

Last week,Gabon launched its first Tier III data center, taking a significant step toward enhancing its digital sovereignty.

The Africa Congo Internet Exchange in May 2026 addeda second data center in the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it the country’s first Internet exchange distributor.

Trend Micro’s enterprise cybersecurity business, TrendAI, in April 2026 announced a substantial enhancement andexpansion of its data center services portfolio in Africa.

As part of efforts to strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty, in February 2026,Mali opened a new Tier III data center.

In January 2026, Burkina Faso’s government also inauguratedtwo new mini data centers.

Those facilities are said to offer a combined storage capacity of around 3,000 terabytes, a tenfold increase on existing systems.
