The EU Local Dialogue on “The future of the rice sector in Europe: resilience, food security and fair competitiveness” will explore the future of the European rice sector in the context of sustainability, competitiveness, food security and rural development. It will provide an opportunity to discuss the key challenges and opportunities facing rice production, including climate change adaptation, innovation, water management, market resilience, international trade and the long-term viability of European rice-growing regions.

The discussion will contribute to the debate surrounding the European Committee of Regions Own Initiative NAT Opinion on The future of the rice sector in Europe: a common strategy, for which CoR member, organizing this event, Mr. Alberto Cirio serves as Rapporteur.

The event aims to gather perspectives from policymakers, rice producers and associations, researchers, industry representatives and local and regional policy makers, fostering dialogue on policy priorities and strategic actions needed to strengthen the European rice value chain.

The event will take the form of a high-level panel discussion held during the International Rice Festival (Risò), which will take place in Vercelli on 11-14 September 2026. The Festival is a unique project that goes beyond the event itself: it was created to celebrate rice-growing culture and give a voice to those who preserve, and share it with the world every day. It is an opportunity to discover the region through its roots and its finest products.
