The United Kingdom named Kanishka Narayan as its minister for artificial intelligence on July 21, 2026. This appointment signifies the first occasion an AI-focused position has been included in the Prime Minister’s Cabinet. Narayan, a Labour politician, has served the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, in the House of Commons since 2024. This new role was established during a broader Cabinet reshuffle in London, the UK government’s capital.

Who Is Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s Inaugural AI Minister?

Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India, Narayan relocated to Cardiff, Wales, when he was 12 years old. This individual of Indian heritage has been the Member of Parliament for the Vale of Glamorgan since 2024. Prior to his promotion this July, he occupied the position of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for AI and Online Safety from September 2025.

Why Is the AI Minister Position Crucial for the UK Government?

Established in 2026, the AI minister role was a new addition to the UK’s ministerial framework. Its responsibilities encompass artificial intelligence policy, online safety, and digital regulation. Integrating this position into the Cabinet means that, for the first time, the UK has granted AI policy a direct presence at its top decision-making forum.

What Modifications Has the UK Implemented in Its AI and Technology Departments?

Concurrent with this appointment, the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) ceased to exist. Its duties concerning artificial intelligence and online harms are now divided between an enlarged Department for Business and Trade and the Culture Department. This reorganization was viewed by Whitehall, London’s administrative center for the UK government, as integral to the same reshuffle that established the AI minister’s position.
