Popular Nollywood actor, Kunle Remi, has stirred controversy after attributing the recurring flooding in Lagos to what he described as the “dirtiness” of Nigerians

In a video shared on his Instagram story on Monday, the actor, known for his roles in several hit movies, vented his frustration over the recent heavy rains that have left many parts of Lagos State submerged

“Let us call a spade a spade, We are a dirty people. Nigerians are dirty people and that’s why there is flood everywhere,” Remi stated in the clip

He narrated how the flooding has escalated beyond previous limits, noting that it was no longer confined to the Island alone

“I saw in the news Gbagada is flooded, even Ilupeju… My friend i do not even know if he is eating well or if he is alive he has been stuck in Agungi.”

He stressed the need for Nigerians to change their habits regarding waste disposal to prevent blocked drainage and repeated flooding disasters

The video, shared widely on platforms including X, quickly drew mixed reactions. Many agreed with his assessment while others criticised him for oversimplifying a complex issue involving poor infrastructure and governance

Reacting to the Video reshared by popular blog Instablog9ja, user #_Temmyyyyy wrote “This is so true, 80% of Lagos is so dirty and smelly, both the island and mainland whether it’s rainy or not. I don’t think it was as bad as this when Fasola was governor.”

Another user, #OluwatobiTofun1, noted “Kunle Remi’s comments have sparked debate, with many agreeing that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to blocked drainage systems and worsening floods. Others argue that while public behaviour plays a role, stronger urban planning, proper drainage infrastructure, and effective waste management are equally essential to tackling flooding in Lagos.”

However, not everyone agreed. #Son_Of_Grace12 countered “So dirtiness makes everywhere dey flood? Be like dis one no get sense is there any proper drainage system?”

Actor Kunle Remi has previously used his platform to comment on social issues affecting Nigerians. The latest outburst comes amid reports of severe flooding in several Lagos communities following days of torrential rainfall, displacing residents and causing significant damage to property

As reactions continue to pour in, many are calling on authorities to intensify efforts in clearing drainages and enforcing sanitation laws, even as citizens reflect on personal habits that may worsen the situation
