From the opening ceremonies to competition venues, employees reflect on a week of inspiration

For many U.S. Bank employees, the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games were more than a volunteer opportunity. They were a chance to witness extraordinary determination, celebrate achievement and experience the power of inclusion firsthand.

As the Official Volunteer Sponsor, U.S. Bank helped mobilize more than 10,000 volunteers who supported the six-day event last month. The bank also served as the Official Competitive Cheer Sponsor, helping spotlight a sport that has grown rapidly since its USA Games debut four years ago.

From welcoming athletes at the opening ceremony to supporting events across the Twin Cities, U.S. Bank employees came away with lasting memories and a renewed appreciation for the athletes’ perseverance and passion. Here, several share what they experienced and the moments that inspired them most.

Todd Ackerman, head of independent risk review and assessments and Special Olympics MN board member
I had the opportunity to walk into the arena with a delegation of athletes, and as soon as we entered the arena, it was like a wall of joy that hit me. It was incredibly overwhelming, and I cannot explain to anybody who hasn’t had that feeling before what that experience was like.

U.S. Bank employees were among the more than 10,000 volunteers who supported the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in the Twin Cities last month.

    Ellyn Karaffa, talent consultant
I volunteered at the opening ceremony, and it was an amazing time, with beautiful weather, lots of excitement and great energy. Having the opportunity to welcome everyone to kick off the week’s events, see the teams be introduced and see the torch be lit was such an incredible experience. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to welcome and celebrate the athletes and take part in the excitement.

Marissa Woodbeck, head of digital accessibility for experience design
It is a full circle moment for me. I used to be a coach for young, talented Special Olympics athletes, and to see them here today – it reinforces that there’s so much possibility in the world when these athletes are given the right tools and accessibility.

Sarah Haase, technical senior product manager
One of my favorite moments was volunteering for the competitive cheer event. We stood behind the performance floor curtains, high-fiving athletes as they came off the stage. Athlete after athlete came through saying things like, “That was our best performance ever!” Getting a front-row seat to those moments of pride, confidence and pure joy was incredible.

Ren Noel Johnson, fraud risk manager
I was grateful for the opportunity to play a small part in making such an incredible event possible. I volunteered in the tennis venue, where I got to watch the athletes compete with so much determination and passion. I also had the chance to explore the Fan Fair on campus and take in all the excitement. It was an inspiring experience, and I’m thankful to have been a part of it!
