The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has put down a marker ahead of the local government elections with the recruitment of the former eThekwini African National Congress (ANC) chairperson, Zandile Gumede.
The party unveiled Gumede as an addition to its ranks during a media briefing in Durban on Monday.
The former eThekwini Mayor will be the MK Party’s deputy convenor in KwaZulu-Natal and is expected to be the party’s mayoral candidate in the metro.
Gumede has kept a low political profile over the past couple of years after the ANC compelled her to step aside due to her ongoing corruption trial.
MK Party Secretary General Sibonelo Nomvalo said Gumede’s recruitment is a game-changer for the party.
“We welcome you ma, we are giving you a very warm reception because you have unquestionable credentials in the politics of KwaZulu-Natal and in the politics of South Africa.
“We know that you are coming with a very positive paradigm shift and a positive contribution in the MK Party. Let’s join our hands together in building this strong ship of the left.”
Meanwhile, Gumede said she doesn’t want to answer questions about ditching the ANC for the MK Party.
“Secretary General, please allow me not to answer these questions, but I do want to say I am grateful to be welcomed with this much warmth to the MK Party.”
