48th World Heritage Committee: dates and agenda

From 20 to 29 July 2026, Busan (South Korea) hosts the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The meeting will examine about 30 new nominations and review the conservation status of a number of existing World Heritage Sites.

    Italy’s nomination: the condominium theatres

Among the nominations under review is Italy’s proposal concerning the system of condominium theatres dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. These are community-operated theatre venues found in many Italian towns and cities, notable for their historical, architectural and social significance in the cultural life of urban communities.

    Implications of the nomination

    • International recognition: World Heritage listing would highlight the distinctive historical and cultural values of these theatres.
    • Conservation and protection: increased focus on restoration, management and sustainable use.
    • Local impact: enhanced cultural programming, quality tourism and potential funding for maintenance.

Practical information for following the session

The session takes place in Busan and runs from 20 to 29 July 2026. Decisions and evaluation outcomes will be published at the close of the session; those following remotely should check UNESCO’s official channels and updates from Italian cultural authorities for documents and announcements.

    Why visit Italy’s condominium theatres

Condominium theatres provide a rare insight into local community life and pre-industrial theatrical practice: interiors, stages and fixtures often survive and tell stories of collective participation and urban social history. Including them in visits to Italy’s UNESCO-related heritage sites helps discover lesser-known but meaningful facets of the national cultural legacy.
