“Chersonesos Taurica” in the temporarily occupied Crimea may soon be added to the list of World Heritage sites under threat due to military actions and climate-related factors. From July 19 to 29, the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is taking place in Busan (Republic of Korea), writes France 24.

“Another potential candidate is the ancient Greek settlement of ‘Chersonesos Taurica’ on the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia unilaterally occupied from Ukraine in 2014. Ukraine claims that it faces threats from unauthorized excavations, large-scale construction projects, and the removal of artifacts following Russia’s invasion of Crimea,” the statement reads.

    Reference
“Chersonesos Taurica” is an ancient Greek settlement in the Northern Black Sea region, founded by colonists from Ancient Greece in the 6th century B.C. The city became a major political, economic, and cultural center of the region. In 2013, the archaeological complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Chersonesos Taurica, together with its suburbs, covers an area comprising almost the entire modern city of Sevastopol.

    • The so-called “Crimean Ministry of Culture” granted permission for residential development within the “Chersonesos Taurica” Nature Reserve.
