Uganda’s AFCON 2027 Local Organizing Committee boss has disclosed that CAF is keen for the country to stage the tournament’s opener

While division of matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has not been made public, Uganda claims it has been approached to host the opening ceremony.

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania will co-host AFCON 2027 with the country set to use Mandela National Stadium (Namboole Stadium) and Hoima City Stadium as the main venues.

Now, Uganda’s AFCON 2027 Communications and Signage Sub-Committee chairman Dr Dennis Mugimba says the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approached the country about hosting the opening ceremony.

According to NBS Sport Uganda, Mugimba says Uganda has both the financial capacity and readiness to deliver the event if officially selected.

Will Uganda Host AFCON 2027 Opener?

It remains to be seen if Uganda will get the rights to host the tournament’s opener after previous hints from CAF that Tanzania was set to stage the AFCON 2027 opening ceremony while Kenya will host the final.

Uganda is intensifying preparations for the tournament and will need to meet deadlines on time to be in prime position to stage the matches, leave alone the opening ceremony.

CAF inspectors identified various infrastructural gaps during the last inspection tour with Namboole cited to be behind schedule while Hoima Stadium needed fixing at key areas.

The next inspection tour is set to take place in August as ‘Big Brother’ looks to ensure the standards do not drop after Morocco set the bar so high.
