Hours after Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cupon Sunday, the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) turned to the European country for technical expertise.

EFA has tasked Spanish coach Tomeu Perelló Palou with overseeing a talent identification project to, in the long run, steer the Eswatini national team to the World Cup finals.

Spanish coach takes up Eswatini challenge

The Mallorca-born tactician was unveiled on Monday to begin his two-year tenure as a FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Coach, a challenge he said he had taken in his stride.

“I believe there is a great deal of talent in this country, and I am confident that, with time, we can develop players and unlock the talent that exists across Eswatini,” Perelló Palou told the EFA website.

    Creating player pathway

EFA general secretary Frederick Mngomezulu described the Spaniard’s appointment as a major leap towards strengthening Eswatini’s player development pathway.

“The coach will help identify talent, refine skills both on and off the pitch, and contribute towards the long-term goal of producing elite players capable of competing at the highest level, including the FIFA World Cup,” said Mngomezulu, as quoted by EFA website.

Perelló Palou’s mandate is overseeing the identification of promising young footballers, refining their technical and personal development, and helping build a sustainable pipeline of elite players.

The primary mandate of the Spaniard is overseeing the FIFA Talent Academy in Nhlangano by working closely with boys and girls.

FIFA Technical Consultant Serame Letsoaka said the academy-based development provides young players with the consistent, high-quality training needed to compete successfully on the international stage.

“Consistent daily training from a young age will produce better results at regional competitions such as COSAFA,” Letsoaka told the website.

A brainchild of Arsene Wenger, the FIFA’s TDS is a global initiative aimed at providing every talented player with the opportunity to reach their full potential through structured coaching, elite training environments, and long-term player development pathways.
