The New Development Bank (NDB) has appointed Monale Ratsoma as its new Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer, with effect from 8 July 2026. The appointment was approved by the bank’s Board of Governors and places the South African financial expert in charge of risk management, corporate strategy, institutional partnerships and environmental, social and governance standards. South Africa’s National Treasury described Ratsoma as an experienced international financial strategist with more than two decades of expertise spanning economic policy, development finance, sovereign funding, macroeconomic analysis and global capital markets.

Experienced leader takes on expanded responsibilities

Before assuming his new role, Ratsoma served as the New Development Bank’s Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer from July 2024 to July 2026. During that period, he oversaw the bank’s multicurrency funding strategy, including programmes linked to the Euro Medium Term Note, Panda Bonds and South African rand funding markets. He also supervised financial reporting and the preparation of the bank’s financial statements. Earlier, he led the NDB’s Africa Regional Centre between 2018 and 2024, establishing the institution’s first regional office dedicated to financing development projects across Africa.

Strong background in economic policy and public finance

Ratsoma also held several senior positions at South Africa’s National Treasury from 2011 to 2018, including Deputy Director-General for Economic Policy. In that role, he led macroeconomic forecasting, economic modelling and policy reforms. He later served as Acting Deputy Director-General for International and Regional Economic Policy, where he helped negotiate African Union financing reforms and coordinated South Africa’s engagement with multilateral development banks, the G20, BRICS, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).

His career also includes responsibility for managing South Africa’s sovereign debt portfolio and serving on the boards of several public institutions. Ratsoma holds a master’s degree in development economics from the University of Johannesburg, along with economics qualifications from the University of the Western Cape, supported by executive training from the Gordon Institute of Business Science and international institutions.
