Kenya, 18 July 2026 – Suba North parliamentary aspirant Dr James Akali used a funeral gathering to rally support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid while signalling an intensifying political contest for the constituency ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Akali had joined residents in mourning the late Senior Chief Kowuor and Rev. Kapis Kowuor at Kasgunga-Kachola Village, describing the two as distinguished leaders whose service had transformed the community.
“Senior Chief Kowuor was a true servant of the people. May their souls rest in eternal peace and may those they have left behind find comfort in the Lord,” he said.
The sombre ceremony quickly took on political overtones as Akali claimed that some individuals who had declared interest in the Suba North parliamentary seat were unlikely to remain in the race until the election.
Without providing evidence, he alleged that apart from himself, several aspirants, including Victor Nidiege, were part of a strategy designed to protect the incumbent Member of Parliament before eventually withdrawing from the contest. The remarks drew laughter from mourners.
Akali also blended biblical teachings with his political message, quoting scripture to support his leadership ambitions as sections of the crowd responded enthusiastically.
He urged politicians in Homa Bay County and the wider Nyanza region to unite behind President William Ruto, saying the Head of State deserved a second term to complete his development agenda.

“President William Ruto means well for us. Let us support him for two terms,” Akali said, urging residents not to be distracted by competing political narratives.
The remarks underscore growing efforts by leaders associated with the Broad-Based Government to consolidate support for Ruto in a region that has traditionally voted for the opposition.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo echoed the call for unity, saying leaders supporting the Broad-Based Government should remain steadfast behind ODM leader Dr Oburu Oginga Odinga as consultations continue on structures to strengthen the political arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
Akali concluded by calling for issue-based politics, urging aspiring leaders to avoid personal attacks and instead compete on development agendas. He said outgoing and incoming leaders should work together to ensure a smooth political transition and place the interests of residents above political rivalry.
