Africa’s next generation of football talent is set to take centre stage in Azerbaijan as the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival 2026™ brings together young players from across the world in a new era of international youth football.

The tournament, which kicks off on 24 October 2026 in Baku, is open to all FIFA Member Associations, creating a rare opportunity for African nations to test their emerging players against peers from different football cultures and regions.

More than 3,000 players, coaches and officials are expected to participate in the boys’ inaugural edition, with almost 1,000 matches scheduled across six matchdays.

A new platform for African youth development

For African football, the tournament provides another international platform for young players and technical teams to gain competitive experience beyond the continent.
Unlike traditional FIFA youth competitions that require teams to qualify through regional championships, the new U-15 World Cup & Festival brings together all FIFA Member Associations, allowing countries with different levels of football development to participate on the global stage.

Teams will compete in an 8v8 format, with matches consisting of two 20-minute halves. Each delegation will comprise 14 players and up to six staff members, with players born in 2011 or 2012 eligible to compete.

The format is designed to give every participating team a sustained competitive programme rather than sending teams home after an early exit.

    Every team guaranteed more football

The competition begins with a qualification phase in which teams will play four or five round-robin matches.

Their performances will then determine their placement in one of six performance tiers for the second phase. Teams will continue competing through the final matchday, with each tier producing its own winner.

2026 FIFA U-15 World Cup draw

The champion of Tier A will be crowned the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival champion. This structure is intended to ensure that young players from less established football nations can still play several meaningful international matches and gain valuable development experience.

Baku prepares for a football festival

The Hovsan Competition Complex will serve as the main venue, with infrastructure capable of hosting up to 20 matches simultaneously. As many as ten games can be staged on each pitch in a single day.

The opening match and the tier finals on 30 October will be played at the iconic Crystal Hall in Baku.

The scale of the event is underlined by the involvement of approximately 250 volunteers, who will support the organisation of the first edition.

    Wenger highlights global opportunity

FIFA Chief of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger says the tournament is designed to address the unequal access to international competition experienced by young players around the world.

“Talent exists everywhere, but young players do not always have the same opportunities to test themselves internationally,” Wenger said.

He added that bringing players together at U-15 level would expose them to different playing styles and football cultures while helping them develop through meaningful competition.

For African football, that international exposure could provide an important learning environment for both players and coaches as countries continue strengthening their youth development structures.

Africa and the wider football world converge

The tournament represents FIFA’s broader attempt to make international youth football more accessible, particularly for Member Associations that rarely reach traditional FIFA competitions.

For African nations, the event offers an opportunity to benchmark youth pathways against teams from other continents while giving promising players an early taste of international football.

The inaugural boys’ tournament will be followed by a girls’ edition in 2027, before both competitions are scheduled to become annual events from 2028.

With Azerbaijan also set to co-host the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2027™, the country is becoming an increasingly important destination for FIFA’s youth football programmes.

As the young stars arrive in Baku, the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival will not only crown winners but also create a new global stage where Africa’s emerging generation can compete, learn and build international experience.
