FIFA’s Strategic Expansion in Africa with New Office in Morocco

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the opening of a new FIFA Africa office in Rabat, Morocco, slated for 2025, during a special ceremony held at the Mohammed the 6th football complex. Infantino highlighted the global impact this office is expected to have on football, positioning it alongside FIFA’s other international hubs in Paris, Miami, and Jakarta. These hubs are part of FIFA’s strategy to enhance its connections with its 211 member associations globally and foster football’s development worldwide.

The FIFA Africa office in Rabat is being praised not just as a sports center or academy but as the nerve center of Moroccan and African football, and symbolically, as of today, of world football as well. This initiative is part of Morocco’s growing influence in the sport, demonstrated by its recent successes on the world stage, including the Moroccan men’s national team reaching the World Cup semi-final in 2022 and the women’s team making it to the knockout stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup the subsequent year.

In his speech, Infantino thanked King Mohammed the 6th and the Royal Morocco Football Federation, led by Fawzi Lekja, for their contributions to the development of football in Morocco and Africa. Lekja, a significant figure in football administration, serves as the first vice president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), a FIFA Council member, and leads the committee for the joint candidacy of Morocco, Spain, and Portugal to host the 2030 World Cup.

Looking towards the future, Morocco will not only host the Under-17 Women’s World Cup for the next five years but will also co-host the Centenary World Cup in 2030 alongside Spain and Portugal. This event marks the second World Cup hosted in Africa and promises to be a grand celebration of football. Infantino’s closing remarks emphasized teamwork and collaboration as vital to realizing these ambitious goals, illustrating FIFA’s commitment to uniting and enhancing football around the world through its strategic presence in Morocco.
