Small Business Project Ventures (SBP Ventures), a venture-building and ecosystem infrastructure firm focused on accelerating the growth of Nigeria’s small and medium-sized enterprises, has officially launched a new platform designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing entrepreneurs
The launch brought together corporate leaders, investors and key stakeholders within Nigeria’s SME ecosystem for discussions on strengthening entrepreneurship and creating sustainable pathways for business growth
Speaking at the event, Managing Partner of SBP Ventures, Nwanne Nwonwu, outlined the organisation’s vision of closing critical gaps that continue to limit the potential of small businesses across the country
According to her, the firm’s approach is built around three strategic pillars aimed at improving access to funding, enhancing regulatory compliance and strengthening business development support for entrepreneurs
The first initiative, the Small Business Innovation Challenge (SBIC), is designed to identify and nurture promising businesses, creating a pipeline of high-potential enterprises capable of attracting investment and scaling their operations
The second pillar, the Small Business Standardisation Anchor (SBSA), focuses on helping SMEs improve regulatory compliance and operational standards, enabling them to build stronger and more sustainable businesses
The third component, the Small Business Fund (SBF), will serve as a dedicated investment vehicle providing capital to qualified businesses with strong growth potential
Nwonwu noted that despite contributing more than half of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product, many SMEs continue to face significant barriers, including limited visibility, customer acquisition difficulties, restricted access to finance and weak operational structures
She explained that SBP Ventures is designed to provide the support infrastructure many small businesses need to overcome these challenges and position themselves for long-term success
According to her, the platform connects entrepreneurs with funding opportunities, mentorship and strategic networks while also helping them navigate regulatory requirements and improve business readiness for investment
She further emphasised that SBP Ventures is not intended to be a short-term intervention programme but rather a long-term ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs throughout different stages of their growth journey
The organisation’s mandate includes helping business owners formalise their operations, strengthen their market positioning, comply with statutory regulations and prepare for investment opportunities
As access to finance, business formalisation and operational efficiency remain key challenges for many African SMEs, initiatives such as SBP Ventures could play an important role in strengthening enterprise development, improving business sustainability and supporting economic growth
The launch highlights the growing recognition of SMEs as critical drivers of employment, innovation and economic development, while reinforcing the need for coordinated support systems that enable entrepreneurs to scale and compete effectively
