Retirement planning begins with a simple question. Where should home be when work ends?

For many South Africans abroad, retirement brings more than financial decisions. It raises questions about family, healthcare, identity and quality of life.

Some dream of returning to a bush sunrise or a coastal town. Others have built lives overseas and cannot imagine leaving. The best choice depends on balancing emotions with facts.

WHY RETIREMENT PLANNING STARTS WITH MORE THAN MONEY

Many expats assume returning to South Africa will stretch their savings further. That can be true, especially for retirees receiving pensions in stronger currencies.

Everyday expenses, property prices outside major cities and domestic services may cost less than in countries such as the United Kingdom or Australia.

But money tells only part of the story. Healthcare, for example, deserves equal attention.

Countries with established public healthcare systems may offer predictable medical cover for retirees.

South Africa has excellent private healthcare, but access depends on medical aid and personal finances. Medical inflation has also exceeded general inflation for many years.

    Tax also matters.

South Africans should understand their tax residency status before relocating. Double taxation agreements can reduce the risk of paying tax twice, but the rules differ between countries.

Professional advice remains essential before making permanent decisions.

SHOULD RETIREMENT PLANNING INCLUDE A RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA?

For many, the answer lies in relationships rather than spreadsheets.

Grandchildren, ageing parents and lifelong friends often become more important after retirement. Familiar languages, traditions and landscapes can also improve emotional wellbeing.

    Returning, however, requires realistic expectations.

South Africa continues to face challenges including electricity supply disruptions, crime and pressure on public infrastructure.

Some returning retirees choose secure estates or smaller towns where living costs remain manageable while maintaining access to private healthcare.

The country also offers advantages that are difficult to measure financially.

Its climate encourages outdoor living throughout much of the year. National parks, beaches and mountain trails remain accessible and affordable compared with similar experiences overseas.

WHAT SHOULD EXPATS ASK BEFORE MAKING THE FINAL DECISION?

No single answer fits every family.

Retirees should compare healthcare costs, visa or residency requirements, exchange rate exposure and estate planning rules. They should also consider where they expect to spend most of their time with family.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) notes that South Africa’s public old age pension is means-tested, while occupational retirement coverage remains incomplete compared with many developed economies.

That makes personal retirement savings especially important for returning South Africans. The organisation also highlights that retirement planning works best when decisions consider long-term financial sustainability rather than short-term currency movements.

Retirement is no longer simply about stopping work. It is about choosing the life that follows.

For some South Africans, that future begins with a flight home. For others, home now lies elsewhere.

Therefore, the wisest retirement planning decision is the one that protects both financial security and peace of mind.
