The Parliament of Sierra Leone, today, Thursday, July 16, 2026, unanimously approved a motion to discontinue charges against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma (photo), marking a significant moment in the country’s political and judicial landscape.

The motion, moved by Leader of Government Business Hon. Matthew Sahr Nyuma and seconded by Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition, received full bipartisan support.

Lawmakers from both sides commended the Attorney General’s decision, emphasizing that it aligns with constitutional provisions and promotes national cohesion.

Key elements of the motion include ensuring the wellbeing of the former president and providing assistance to families of those who lost their lives while defending the state.

Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas urged Members of Parliament to present the resolution formally to the House, describing the decision as a step toward reconciliation and stability.

The unanimous approval reflects a rare moment of unity between the ruling and opposition benches. This move could ease political tensions and foster dialogue across party lines. It also underscores Parliament’s role in balancing justice with national interest.

The development has sparked public debate on how Sierra Leone should navigate accountability for former leaders while maintaining respect for constitutional safeguards.
