A new study led by researchers at Yale University School of Public Health reveals that climate change is reshaping the geography of childhood malaria across sub-Saharan Africa, increasing the disease risk in cooler highland regions while reducing transmission in some of the continent’s hottest areas.

It’s been more than two decades since scientists first reported that a warming climate was responsible for malaria epidemics in the mountains of Kenya and Ethiopia, making it one of the first diseases linked to climate change. But after years of debate, it has remained unclear whether climate change is indeed making malaria worse.
Rising temperatures are redistributing the risk of childhood malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in areas of “new risk” in the east and south of the continent, but also “relief hotspots” in western Africa.
