The victory of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in theOl Kalouparliamentary by-election has reshaped the political landscape in the Mount Kenya region, handing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachaguaa major political boost while dealing President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) a significant setback. The by-election, triggered by the death of former MP David Kiaraho, attracted national attention as both camps treated it as a test of their influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Waweru defeated UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyaga after a tightly contested race that saw intensive campaigns by senior political leaders. The victory delivered DCP its first parliamentary seat since the party was formed and strengthened its presence in national politics.
The contest had evolved beyond a race for one parliamentary seat, becoming a referendum on the political strength of President Ruto and Gachagua in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region. Both leaders and their allies invested heavily in the campaigns, underscoring the strategic importance of the constituency.
For Gachagua, the outcome reinforces his claim that he remains an influential political figure in the region despite his fallout with President Ruto and his exit from the Kenya Kwanza administration. The result is expected to energise his supporters and encourage more leaders to associate with DCP.
Political analysts say the victory provides DCP with momentum as it seeks to expand its structures across Mount Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections. The party is now expected to intensify grassroots mobilisation and recruit more elected leaders in the region.
For UDA, the defeat raises concerns about its ability to maintain the overwhelming support it received from Mount Kenya during the 2022 General Election. The result suggests that sections of the electorate may be reconsidering their political allegiance.
The by-election also demonstrated that local political contests can serve as an indicator of broader political trends. Although only one parliamentary seat was at stake, the outcome has triggered fresh debate over the changing political dynamics within the region.
UDA is now expected to reassess its political strategy in Mount Kenya by strengthening grassroots networks, engaging local leaders and highlighting government development projects to regain voter confidence before the next General Election.
The victory gives DCP a stronger bargaining position in future political negotiations and coalition talks. A parliamentary seat provides the party with greater visibility and a platform to advance its agenda nationally.
The campaign period was characterised by heightened political activity, heavy security deployment and isolated incidents that attracted attention from election observers and the media. Despite the tensions, voting and the tallying process were completed under the supervision of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
The result is also likely to encourage opposition leaders seeking to build alliances capable of challenging President Ruto in 2027. Gachagua’s growing influence in Mount Kenya could make him a key figure in future coalition discussions.
While the loss is politically significant for UDA, analysts caution against viewing it as a complete rejection of the ruling party. UDA still retains substantial political representation across Mount Kenya, and the region is expected to remain highly competitive.
Attention will now shift to how both parties consolidate their support ahead of future elections. DCP will seek to convert its breakthrough into broader regional influence, while UDA will work to strengthen its support base and counter the growing challenge posed by its new rival.
The Ol Kalou by-election has therefore emerged as more than a local electoral contest. It has become an early indicator of the political battle taking shape in Mount Kenya, with both DCP and UDA expected to intensify campaigns as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
- The outcome is likely to shape political calculations in the coming months, influencing party strategies, coalition building and voter mobilisation across one of Kenya’s most influential voting blocs.
